The same happens with a file called .html etc.

Simply add .desktop to the filename. It won't even appear on the desktop.

Maybe the properties dialog should append .desktop when there's no
.desktop (nor .kdelnk) at the end of the name, but that's a bit intrusive.......

Always the same problem: extensions. As someone said, the only real solution
would be a file system that stores the mimetype......
