In cases other than a startup notification this might not always be
true.

I've read about an experiment conducted at a university where they
tested the effect of status bar messages on the "perceived speed". In
the case of Emacs and "collecting garbage" messages they found out that
leaving the messages resulted in a perceived speed that was much higher
:)
