Hi KDE Helpdesk
I use Netscape on two systems on the same machine version 4.6.1 on Windows
98 and RedHat Linux 6.1 Mandrake (Helios) Release. Under Windows 98 I have
no problems starting and using Netscape for both Internet and Email
connections. I have two URL's www.tesco.net and www.screaming.net. The set
up at Tesco's is straightforward. At Screaming.net they use multiple proxy
servers so
the connection is a bit more difficult but works OK under Windows 98.
On my Red Hat Linux system which is held on a different hard drive to my
Windows
files I can log into the KDE desktop and use Netscape as a Browser offline.
When I start
Netscape two processes are started
a) (dns helper)
b) /usr/i386-glibc20-linux/lib/ld-l
I have no problems connecting to the internet using the kwvdial system
provided using my external modem and for both of the URL's I get the online
status with pppd active. The Screaming.net connection however times out
after a few seconds whereas the Tesco.net connection continues OK. I put
this down to the use of proxy servers by Screami.net?
However whenever I try to use Netscape, having once made a connection to the
internet I get messages from Netscape saying "cannot find home.netscape.com
"etc. I try
changing the default login on to www.tesco.net with s similar results
message message. In
essence although I am on line Netscape cannot make the necessary connection.
In further explorations it tells me to set the SOCKS_NS parameter to the
system nameserver, which in my case does not exist on my workstation
machine, possibly only on the URL server, which is allocated automatically
when I log in.
One further clue is available. When I run Windows in Safe Mode the system
cannot find my modem, which isto be  expected. Under these conditions
Netscape gives the error message "Netscape was unable to create a network
socket connection"
Your assistance is therefore required either directly on through contact
with others who have had the same problem.
Is there possibly a book on the KDE Desktop that describes the full contents
and which I can buy in the UK? There are many facilities provided but do
descriptions of their function etc.
