no, that's what puzzled me. i've tried all sorts of variations, but 
it finally comes down to having to enter those subdirectories and do 
make and make install if kasteroids and kspaceduel are to compile, 
which they then do without incident.

the other strange behavior i noticed seems attributable to 
yesterday's qt snapshot. one from a week ago works fine and exhibits 
none of the peculiarities i'd encountered.
