I haven't found anything more portable. That's why I wrote the
abstraction interface in KTop. Have a look at the latest KTop 1.x code
(http://devel-home.kde.org/~ktop) if you don't have it already. It
supports Linux, Solaris, FreeBSD, Digital Unix. And it's fairly easy
to add more platforms.
