looks like a kded problem.

Eithet start kded and then kword without option or no kded and kword
-kdedlocal. I have never tried this mixture, and I don't understand why it
worked only in that strange case. Perhaps try if you do it without kded and
with kdedlocal option, to remove ~/.kde/share/config/kregistry first. Does it
work then?

And becuase of spell checking: The KSpell interface still sucks, so I didn't
work on spellchecking in kword for a long time.
