Are you sure about that? According to the manpage, other stuff like backup
versions of inline functions, vtables and such is also duplicated for each
compilation unit. The #pragma's should keep the compiler from duplicating
this. 

The real space-benefit would come from intelligent template instantiation
though, but it seems that -frepo is somehow broken on egcs-1.1.2.
