I've been using KMail for a long time.  I'm running 1.0.5 at work right now and
works fine.
You can use pine.  The messages you've read (but not deleted) won't be picked up
by kmail, though.  This may not matter to you.  The same is true if you use
kmail via modem -- the read but undeleted messages won't be seen by the kmail
at work.
