and what about setting --enable-final  per default if --enable-debug is
NOT used? This way the average gets what he wants without reading
documentation.

or better: don't use --enable-final but simply set NDEBUG if debug code
is disabled (If the one who compiles doesn't set it, he simply doesn't
want it at all).
