I am trying to "extend" a variable in my Makefile.am.  Doing

CXXFLAGS += -pedantic

fails, giving me only -pedantic and nothing else.

trying

CXXFLAGS = $(CXXFLAGS) -pedantic

gives me just that...literally.  $(CXXFLAGS) doesn't get expanded.

How am I supposed to do this correctly (um, coolo... ;) )
