I want to stress two things/ideas at this point which were mentioned in other
threads and would solve all those things at least for me. And the good thing is
(best at the end): IMO both should be easy to implement (I mean easier than
other solutions)! :-))

1) Integrate KGet into Konqueror. The latter will open a new KGet window (if
  configured to do so) and put the downloads into the queue. KGet could be
  extended so that it provides the possibility to konqueror to show several
  downloads as one progress bar (for gifs/applets/... on HTML pages).

2) Extend KWM so that it can display window titles in the taskbar with a
  progress bar in the background if the title text contains a percentage string.
  This would enable progress bars even for non-KDE apps in a great manner.
  One could also imagine shell scripts displaying progress bars like this.
  Oh, I think this would be KPanel, not KWM, right? :-)
