hmm.. let's try removing one more variable from the equation ... can you 
configure the wallpaper to use a color instead of an image?

i wonder if the issue is that the wallpaper (which is what gets waited on 
before progressing with the log in) is checking to see if there is a locally 
cached version to use (this lives in the user's home; well, usually that's a 
symlink into /tmp, but that's a detail). perhaps the user's home is not 
immediately available, and this ends up blocking until it is and it can check 
the wallpaper cache.

it's an outside chance, but worth removing as a variable, and easy enough to 
do by changing the wallpaper configuration.
