wanted to point out
that there are real examples of where (for whatever reason) \
KDE4 isn't
as snappy as KDE3 to the end user. It's not just people's \
imagination.
Another one i noticed today was just clicking on the system tray \
icon
for amarok. KDE 3 ( my workstation at work) appears instantly, where
for it to appear. (also not running oxygen)

hmm... amarok \
appears instantly for me. I am using Oxygen. I do have all of the composite stuff \
turned on though, so it might be caching the window when it hides \
it.

<blockquote class="gmail_quote" style="border-left: 1px solid \

all get better eventually. KDE3 certainly got faster
every release. It's just \
that for some people, at the moment, no
matter how 'complete' kde4 is , it might \
not be fast enough on their
setup for what they do. Kdevelop on kde4 is quicker \
for me than kde3
so for what i do, KDE4 is more appropriate but everyones use \
case is
different.
things are a bit worse. What bothers me most is that window management isn't as \
perfect or snappy as it should be (particularly with gtk apps). Most of this probably \
isn't kde's fault so much as simply not having an accelerated graphics card though \
(though Windows XP seems to do well with integrated \
graphics).

<blockquote class="gmail_quote" style="border-left: 1px solid \

>> > I also find both Krunner, konqueror and kmail having a little pause \
in
>> > the middle of text entry. This occurs for me on all of my \

may suggest
>> > that some of these applications maybe waiting on disk \
access in areas
>> > where they could possibly do this asynchronously. \
While the operation
>> > wouldn't be faster it would 'feel' faster.
>> i think that's rather the autocompleter - but nothing i could reproduce
>> here (other than krunner has always been a little slower...)
>
> I certainly see this pause from time to time, but it's not consistent, so it
> probably would be difficult to track down.
have kmail configured, so it probably wouldn't be reading anything), and didnt' get \
any input latency. Some things which did cause latency for me:

the first \
time the klipper history is brought up (all the time)

browing a large folder \
previously uncached, e.g. /usr/bin locks up dolphin

more readahead might \
also help (e.g. in gwenview, scrolling the thumbnail bar isn't perfect; though the UI \
doesn't lag, it takes a few seconds for the thumbnails to get filled \
in).

regards,
Nicholas
