A friend of mine used to work as a consultant to a large multi-national. She
was an expert in tailoring a large business accounting package which runs on
another operating system. I've forgotten the name, but believe it was a
German package, and considered the most flexible (and expensive!).

She made a small fortune travelling the world modifying the software for local
conditions, mostly the tax situations, which changed regularly. Apparently
they had looked at generalising things with tax tables, but found that the
taxation bases in countries varied so much that it was all but impossible.
