Michael,

Do you use the nvidia-settings tool that came with the driver? On Gentoo there 
is a separate package for the driver and nvidia-settings and as such you can 
have an older version of nvidia-settings working with a new version of the 
driver. That older version of nvidia-settings might not recognize the new 
options available in the new driver.
