I think so. I have seen many software releases with various numbering
patterns. Most common is the X.Y.Z scheme with _alphaN and _betaN as
common suffixes. Less common but still common is _rcN. Some have _gamma.
A few packages have _pN (openssh) or a, b, c, ... (openssl). But I am
not aware of any software package (except from Trolltech) that uses a
_tpN  suffix. Can you name any?

Interesting indeed. Will be fun to watch (or not). Maybe we should have
a guessing contest? Maybe they will have to call beta1 rcN, where N is
the next rc number that was not yet used. (And if there are actual rcs,
they will have to increment the version. What a mess that would be.)
