 KWin now by default enables compositing on systems where it should work, you 
can explicitly turn it off in the configuration module.

 Could you attach also output from xdpyinfo and glxinfo? Is there anything 
special about your setup?

 I don't know how about in general, but for KWin yes, you can report bugs for 
KDE4's KWin.
