there is no portable way to do this, so you'll need various operating system 
specific implementations... on linux you could do:

	long numCPUs = sysconf(_SC_NPROCESSORS_CONF);

i'm sure you can find info on other systems using google ... this sort of gets 
back to rumblings about wanting a common hardware lib in kde4 =)
