does specifying --with-db-includes=/path/to/db/includes
--with-db-lib=/path/to/db/library work with your version of bdb 4.1?

That is perhaps the case. However, before I amend the error message, I would
appreciate it if you could confirm that configure fails with 4.1 and works
with a newer version. version 4.2 perhaps? If you don't have time, or don't
wish to do this, please let me know and I'll go ahead and amend the error
message.

I will fix the configure script later to report the correct results.

Thanks for pointing this out. I guess you're probably the first to notice
this, since I've not seen any other posts about it.
