Thanks.  I had my system-wide dbus started, which apparently is not enough.

102      20640     1  0 12:54 ?        00:00:00 /usr/bin/dbus-daemon --system

After stopping this and starting the above eval, konsole works.

kvh      25853     1  0 12:58 ?        00:00:00 dbus-daemon --fork --print-pid 
8 --print-address 6 --session
