On SuSE 10.0 (and earlier)  it is just necessary to add a new 
kde<NewVersion>.desktop file  in /usr/share/xsessions and logout and login 
with the new session.

these 2 lines in the new desktop file should read
Exec=<path_to_your_version>/bin/startkde
TryExec=<path_to_your_version>/bin/startkde

IIRC at some point in time it was possible to add a new desktop file in a 
GUI-app, which I can not find any more.

Please could someone update this page.
