I tested both patches on Suse 10 and KDE 3.5 from SVN:

1. the X11_DIR/symbols/group patch works fine here

2. the other patch does not compile :-(
   but when I execute the command in a console I get the expected output, 
   so the patch is probably correct

I really want to have one of the patches in KDE 3.5.1 but I do not know which 
one is the better solution.
