kwin needs to be started by hand again currently. Maybe you should autostart 
an xterm or something.

kdesktop has only been ported via qt4's porting script. it doesn't really work 
and nobody works on it as it will be replaced by a plasmoid once the plasma 
libs have matured.

KDE4 will still need time until it offers more stability, especially since the 
design of kdelibs is being discussed strongly at the moment.
I guess things will brake even more when people start refactoring kdelibs.
