I maintain the current branch as my working desktop.

Yes, you are correct that if more people did this or tested the beta 
releases that more bugs would be found.

However, that is not what I am talking about.  The issues is how to test 
something new.  Obviously when it starts out, it is experimental. 
Unfortunately, what seems to happen is that stuff gets in general 
releases while it still appears to be experimental.  The answer to this 
is not to test beta releases, but rather to do sufficient testing before 
it is added to the code base for the release branch.
