Okay, if that is as intended, I can deal with that.  Restarting kicker 
is not a problem, just the font color changing to black whenever the 
label changes regardless of what I'm doing with 
setPaletteForegroundColor...however...

I did not know about this tool!  Excellent.  Now, the freaky thing is, 
the applet works *perfectly* using appletproxy.  The font color changes 
upon closing the Config dialog and stays changed when the label 
changes.  So, now, the question remains, how come when loaded into the 
kicker proper, the font color always changes to black when the label is 
updated?  I'm gonna toss in some debugging statements now, so I can 
view them with the proxy, but I still suspect a bug someplace...
