Beats me, kio_ftp doesn't set any mimetype by itself [except for symlinks].

You don't have any defaultMimetype=... in your .protocol file, right?
(you shouldn't).

Use KMimeMagic. See Ftp::ftpGet() in kdelibs/kioslave/ftp/ftp.cc
