I find scaled maxspect works the best with my Xinerama setup, which is a bit 
weird because it has one monitor at 1600x1200 and one at 1280x1024 with a 
screen area of 1280x1200 (so both monitors have the same height, so that I 
don't have an un-mouseable space). 

Running with scaled maxpect, the picture is the right proportion on both 
monitors, it is just cut off a tiny bit on the smaller one.

Before this, for a few months I also had my background set by a script that 
used imagemagick to compost two pictures.

But yes, it sure would be nice to have native support for two backgrounds in 
kcontrol.
