well, let's certainly hope so. i would love to be wrong here, because if 
people _don't_ switch to Open Source friendly platforms within the next few 
years, IMHO we will have an extremely difficult read ahead. development 
sustainability and standards accessibility is fundamental to open source 
efforts, neither of which will be easily found in the coming years on 
unfriendly, closed platforms that are themselves seeing active development. 

until very recently, the open source desktop was not being treated as serious 
competition by the two incumbents. this has changed and i expect the coming 
years to be rather unlike the last few.

if the win32 ports are used as migration tools, great. but if they are used 
like cygwin often is ("make my windows machine more like UNIX, please") ...
