stephen,
i notice on the list that you asked "what process is holding /dev/hdc
open"?
i already said: the *process* named kio_file is holding /dev/hdc open.
i should make it clearer.
i am running with KDE_IS_PRELINKED and KDE_FORK_SLAVES, from latest cvs.
so, from memory (i am sorry, this is a week ago and i have since
returned to KDE_3_3_0_RELEASE) KDE_FORK_SLAVES as i understand it tells
kdeinit _not_ to load the library kio_file but to run the _program_
kio_file - am i right?
anyway, i've since returned to KDE_3_3_0_RELEASE, and it's kdeinit with
the library kio_file.la that is holding on to /dev/hdc.
if as you say, you have /dev/hdc opened by kded, then you _definitely_have
not read my response which described the setup:
* i am NOT using kded i am using kvm from the kdenonbeta section.
* i am using a modified version of fstab-sync and HAL which places
entries in an automount file ***NOT*** i repeat ***NOT*** in
/etc/fstab.
to get as close to reproducing this bug as possible you will need to:
1) remove your IDE cdrom drive from /etc/fstab
2) install autofs and add your IDE cdrom drive to /etc/auto.misc,
ensuring that /etc/auto.master has an entry for /etc/auto.misc
in it
if you have any difficulties with this setup, let me know, and i can
either place a pre-compiled version of fstab-sync and hald up on my web
site, or a .deb, or point you in the direction of compile instructions /
patches.
... i won't describe what other cru-joze purple nasties i've also installed
on my system because they would only freak you out. selinux, dbfs, fuse
as a total-filesystem-proxy, that sort of thing :)
