This depends on your distribution...

My /etc/X11/wmsession.d/1kdedevel (I'm on Mandrake) says

NAME=KDEDevel
ICON=kde-wmsession.xpm
DESC=KDE, devel version
EXEC=/mnt/devel/kde/kdedir/bin/startkde
SCRIPT:
source /mnt/devel/kde/kdedir/setup ; exec /mnt/devel/kde/kdedir/bin/startkde

(where the setup file has all those "export" statements)

[Another way is to put them in ~/.kde/env/kdedirs.sh, but this requires both KDEs to be >= 3.3]
