I had problems with artsd and my sound card in the early 2.6.x kernels. It
was a bug in the Local APIC handler. I solved the problem all the time by
switching to a terminal, 'killall -9 artsd' and let KDE finish loading.
Then I'd remove the sound card module, load it again, then allow artsd to
start.

The bug has since been fixed. And I'm using Linux 2.6.6.
