Well yes, welcome to the real world :-). Following standards certainly
does not preclude a program from handling non-standard compliant data,
simply because the program will have to, sooner or later. So the
question of how you handle that data has nothing to do with supporting a
standard, it's purely a useability issue, and it's true for any kind of
program.
