Can someone tell me how to use multiple applnk dirs for the menu?

I'm running Gentoo with cvs kde installed in /opt/kde. The problem is that I 
have menu entries parsed from /opt/kde/share/{applications,applnk} 
and /usr/share/applications but not /usr/share/applnk

I have a feeling it has something to do with XDG_DATA_DIRS but the spec says 
if it is unset it should default to /usr/share anyway
