I know that some references get messed up, there is another report (#54667).

That it's not easy with middle mouse button is IMO a bug of Firefox, other
popups are forced fine to a new tab with middle mouse button.

KDE 3.2 Alpha 1 was released in September, the first Beta in November.

RC time is too late to question an earlier design decision+bugfixes for it.
