Thanks a lot, David, this is exactly the info I was looking for.
Only one extra question:

I was expecting/hoping to have to do the usual process:

  ./configure
  make
  make install

after editing some file somewhere. Does your suggestion mean that I have
to modify that file and then *can* run the 3 step process above, or do I have
to  do something completely different?
