We can't have an option for every possible behavoir of KDE. IMHO we already 
have too many...
If things _can_ be autoconfigured they _should_ be. Why should the user know 
if his video card has alpha-blending acceleration? Why should it change its 
options when he switch from a old videocard to a new one?

BTW this concept should be applied to all the options available in KDE and not 
just this.

What we could add is an option to configure the color of the selection, but I 
think there is something similar in kcmcolors already.

I'd like to point out that I used XRender just as an example... I did not look 
at your implementation and I don't know what kind of acceleration you need.
