Well im not sure but it sounds like your situation is an isolated event.
As I know myself and others have not experienced this. I ran KDE 3.2 beta2
on my laptop for about 2 weeks and it never gave me problems or
sluggishness.(its not on now cause I'm installing a new hard drive)

As well you could have used the precompiled binaries of beta2 for debian.
Unless you *wanted* to compile it. :)
