This conflicts with my design:
There I have a column which is able to display numerical encodings of whatever
kind. Which encoding to use is controlled by an attribute. Another column is
able to display the mapping of the byte values to a character table. This
column would not be restricted to ASCII. There are some other encodings out
there, like the EBCDIC family. Take care of minorities ;)

So you say/propose that display is a/the correct term for the numerical
display of the byte's value?

Oh, I tried so hard to explain :( One more try:
I am searching for correct terms (if there are) for
* a column where bytes are displayed in some numeric encoding
* a column where bytes are displayed using some character encoding
* the name of a category of numerical encodings
* the name of a category of character based encodings

If you could give me some use cases I will create such a widget, too (the
framework is there). But as far as I could see and need it myself you only
want to have a column where the bytes are displayed in some character
encoding and a column with some corresponding numerical display.
Thanks anyway
