hi

finally i found the problem: i compiled qt with png support as a plugin. 
somehow, this does not work, png support needs to be linked directly into qt, 
then kimage_concat works as expected... 
perhaps the error msg in kimage_concat should return
"could not read image. make sure qt supports png files"
or something similar.
