The ServiceType for KMediaPlayer/Engine was there, but not the Service itself. 
If you update kdemultimedia/kaboodle from CVS, it should work.

I'm using the following to instantiate a KMediaPlayer object:
player = 
KParts::ComponentFactory::createInstanceFromQuery<KMediaPlayer::Player>( 
"KMediaPlayer/Player", QString::null, parent );
