Nope. Neither will they die if there =is= a frame. Fortunately.

The frame around the time display isn't comparable to other applet
frames. The latter ones may be seen as redundant because they surround
the whole applet. The former is a design property of one element of
an applet---the time display. The digital clock simulates a real,
physical clock. And these mostly =do= have a frame. (I know, because
I have some standing around here. BTW: My pocket calculator's display
has a frame, too. So has kcalc's. :-)

Yes, but without the possibility to turn the frame on via gui
the default doesn't leave much choice. But I know, that this
wasn't your decision and that it has been added again, anyway.
