I have done some tests with the $KDEDIRS environment variable and some 
directory structures:

KDE looks in all directories for an *.rc file with the name 
share/apps/<appname>/<appname>ui.rc. So you can type (for example) ./kmag and 
use the local kmagui.rc file after performing the following commands (in the 
source dir of kmag):

mkdir share
mkdir share/apps
mkdir share/apps/kmag
ln -s $(pwd)/kmagui.rc share/apps/kmag/
export KDEDIR=.:$(KDEDIR)
