Maybe you first emerged kde as it was kde3.0.x and sometimes later you emerged 
kde and it gave you kde3.1 without deleting the 3.0?

My update just replaces my kde3.1 but I have gentoo only since 3-4 weeks;-)

BTW: Gentoo is much better than SuSE, sorry to Waldo Bastian and co...
