IMHO you underestimate the desire of having a clean desktop. 
And not only devs have non-document files and dirs in their home directory. 
Just use Netscape 4.x's mail client, or install CrossOver with the default 
settings, or start FreeAmp... each will create a directory with often in your 
home, often with non-document files. In the best case the user will just 
wonder about them and ignore them, and the worst case the user will delete 
them and lose data.
