Surely "configure" produces a lot of output, but at the very end I get the 
following:

[snipped lots of configure output]

No cdparanoia III >= 9.7 found! You have to install
cdparanoia to use cd-burning applications.
If cdparanoia is installed please
set the environment variable CDPARANOIA manually.

I am not sure if this works like this for all missing packages, but at least 
for many I get output similar to the above.
