From my experience it largely depends on not only _good_ optimization,
both of qt and kde, but also on the GUI style you use. I've been using
Keramik for a while, without silly animations but with many extra
whistles which come with that style. After some time I missed some
speed, so I enabled again all my extra CFLAGS at compile time...
It improved but it was not enough.
Then I switched to Light-3rd Revision GUI style, with a nice color setup
and with BII window decoration.
now, it's _faaast_. The difference in loading anything, from konqueror,
to KDevelop or whatever is _amazing_. Konqueror loads instantly, with no
delay, formerly it took a few seconds.
I haven't done actual tests, but I can notice it. I can work comfortably
with it now.
This is on Athlon-XP 1800+ with 384MB RAM, the only thing which I should
upgrade - the mem -.
