I found it surprising aswell, since I've been using it for years. But I can't 
guess what other reasons could be appart from security issues. Otherwise there 
might be other reasons as standarisation or who knows what. :(

I did try it several times, and the pop3 port (110)  was completely closed (it 
refused any connection it). I was actually told by the admins I should use 
imap instead.
