Well, I already thought about adding some mount capability to the smb 
ioslave, but didn't get around to do it or to figure out how this then could 
be used from within KDE.

This sounds like a bug, but not in the ioslave.

Yes, being able to use ioslaves from non-kde apps would be very cool.
It is possible to write a gnome vfs modules which wraps all kde ioslaves, so 
at least gnome apps would be able to use them too.
And there was a mail about sync ioslaves some time ago. It implemented a 
synchronous C api for ioslaves and a small lib, which could even be 
preloaded, so that you were able to enter "ls /ioslaves/ftp://ftp.kde.org" in 
your shell, and it should work. Of course this work was not perfectly 
finished, but a starting point.
