hello,
i'm trying to write a plug in for kate, and the instructions say to compile 
into a static library named whatever.la.  i only know how to compile a normal 
static lib with .a extention.  what is the difference between the two?  where 
can i get info on each of them?

i used the command:
ar rs liblanobjfinder.la langobjfinder.o
and KLibLoader is crashing when i it tries to load it.

P.S.  is there a general linux development mailing list?
P.S.S  where can i get info on running a program from within a program and 
examining its stdout?  for example, how do i write a program (in c or c++) 
that runs grep and examins greps output?  hmm, i guess what i'm asking is 
where do i find info on writing a graphical frontend to a command line 
program.  its done all the time, there must good info on it on the web, 
right?  =)
