Its something to do with the memory blocks allocated for the AGP buffer and a 
problem with the cache in the Athlon which means every so often the get mixed 
up.

I had a problem of the whole system freezing such that keyboard/screen/mouse 
appeared dead (although I believe I could still ssh into the machine from 
outside). This was often overnight (I loaded up the system with backups) but 
was random.  

The workaround fixed the problem when I was on 2.4.17 - I am now running 
2.4.19-pre2-ac4 and it appears OK without the workaround.

You may of course be experiencing another problem
